In 2025, we celebrate the 1700th anniversary of the world’s first Ecumenical Council, the Council of Nicaea of AD 325, when 318 bishops of the Church gathered in defence of the Apostolic Faith. The Fathers defeated Arius and his followers, who denied the divinity of Christ. The fathers upheld the Church’s belief in a triune God. We proclaim this in the Nicene Creed.
In each month of this calendar, we present a short life of one of the 318 Holy Fathers along with hymnography of the Church that proclaims the Divine and Human natures of Christ. These ‘Dogmatik’ hymns or ‘Dogmatik Theotokia’ are attributed to Saint John of Damascus born in the second half of the 7th Century who defended the Church against iconoclasm, a heresy that also denies the divinity of Christ.
