Orthodox Burial Plots at Emstrey Cemetery, Shrewsbury

Icon and relic of St Mark the Gravedigger, one of the Kiyvan Fathers, from the Church of the 318 Holy Fathers & St John the Baptist

The Orthodox Church teaches us to hold death in mind not with fear, but with hope — the hope of the resurrection. The body, sanctified by baptism and the Holy Mysteries, is precious, and where we rest until that great day matters. This is why, across the centuries, Orthodox Christians have sought to be buried together, in one place, marked with the sign of their faith.

We are therefore glad to share that the Parish of the 318 Holy Fathers has secured the Exclusive Right of Burial for 45 burial spaces at Emstrey Cemetery, London Road, Shrewsbury. For the first time, members of our community will be able to rest together in one place — in graves marked with distinctively Orthodox memorial stones.

What Has Been Secured?

The Church holds the rights to 20 double plots (each suitable for two burials) and 5 single plots — 45 burial spaces in total. These are lawn plots in a well-maintained section of Emstrey Cemetery.

The Church retains the Exclusive Right of Burial rather than transferring it to individuals. This means the Church can ensure that all memorials are in keeping with the Orthodox tradition — something that matters greatly to us as a community.

Orthodox Memorial Stones

We have commissioned Aidan Hart — one of Britain’s foremost liturgical artists and iconographers, whose work adorns Orthodox churches across the country — to design an Orthodox headstone that will be adapted for each individual burial. The design will be beautiful, durable, and recognisably Orthodox in character.

How to Express Your Interest

If you would like to reserve a plot for yourself or your family, please get in touch with Father Panteleimon or Liz Asser or complete the form below. A full letter setting out the arrangements and costs will be sent to all those who register their interest. There is no commitment required at this stage.

We will also be producing guidance on Orthodox preparation for death and burial, to help parishioners and their families think through practical matters such as wills, funeral planning, and what an Orthodox burial involves.
