Synaxarion of Our Holy Father Mewan, Abbot in Cornwall and Brittany

Synaxarion

Our holy father Mewan was a Welshman, from the region of Ergyng in the Welsh Marches, and a disciple of the great Saint Samson of Dol, who was his spiritual father. Together with Saint Austell, his godson and fellow-disciple, Mewan accompanied Saint Samson on a missionary journey to Cornwall, where the two disciples founded churches that have given their names to the towns of Saint Mewan and Saint Austell.

After the repose of Saint Samson, Mewan crossed to Brittany, where he founded a monastery that likewise bears his name — Méen-le-Grand — in the region of Ille-et-Vilaine. He laboured there as abbot and spiritual father for many years, gathering disciples, establishing the regular life, and bringing the people of Brittany deeper into the life of the Gospel. His monastery became a centre of holiness and learning, and his memory is greatly venerated in both Cornwall and Brittany, a testimony to the vigorous missionary bond between the Celtic churches of Wales, Cornwall, and Armorica in the age of the saints.

Saint Mewan departed to the Lord on the 21st of June, in the early seventh century. He is invoked for healing of the sick, a grace particularly associated with his shrines in Brittany. His feast is observed in the Breton, Cornish, and Welsh churches.
