Nicaea 2025 Festival
A festival of art, music, talks and pilgrimage is to be held in Shrewsbury in May and June. This will mark 1,700 years since one of the most important events in the history of the Christian Church.
The ‘Nicaea 2025’ festival will celebrate the anniversary of the first Council of Nicaea, held in 325AD, which formulated the Nicene Creed, the core declaration of faith that lies at the heart of Christian belief.
The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Thyateira and Great Britain chose Shrewsbury to host its national celebrations because the town’s Orthodox Church is thought to be the only church in Western Europe dedicated to the ‘318 Holy Fathers of Nicaea’.

Nicaea 2025 FAQ
What is Nicaea 2025?
Nicaea 2025 marks the 1700th anniversary of the world’s first Ecumenical Council. Held in 325 AD, the Council of Nicaea brought together 318 bishops to affirm the Apostolic Faith and define the Church’s belief in the triune God, as expressed in the Nicene Creed.
Why is the Council of Nicaea important?
The Council of Nicaea (325 AD) was the first ecumenical council of the Christian Church and remains one of the most significant events in Christian history. Convened by Emperor Constantine the Great, the council played a crucial role in addressing the Arian controversy, affirming the divinity of Christ, and establishing theological unity within Christianity.

Why is Shrewsbury Orthodox Church hosting the UK’s Nicaea 2025 celebrations?
As the Greek Orthodox Church of the 318 God-bearing Fathers in Shrewsbury, we hold a unique honour as the only parish in the United Kingdom—and possibly all of Western Europe—dedicated to the Holy Fathers who courageously defended the faith at the Council of Nicaea in 325 AD.
I’m not an Orthodox Christian, can I still attend these events?
Yes! The Nicaea 2025 celebrations are open to everyone, regardless of religious background. This historic anniversary is a moment of unity and we warmly welcome all who wish to participate in the events and experience the rich history and significance of the Council of Nicaea.
