Icons of the Orthodox Church reveal a remarkable vision of the world, at once more exalted above the mundane, and yet also homely in their physical beauty. They challenge us and call us. The eyes of the saints regard us with tenderness and compassion, without a hint of sentimentality.

The unusual stylistic forms of icons inspired many of the great artists of the early 20th century, including Matise and Kandinsky. And they are not merely an eastern Byzantine phenomenon; Britain’s early Christian art tradition was iconographic, producing countless masterpieces of Celtic, Saxon, and Romanesque sacred liturgical art.

This large exhibition is proof that the icon tradition is alive and dynamic, consisting as it does of high-quality icons painted by icon painters, most living in Britain. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see contemporary icons by leading icon painters of Britain.

This exhibition is part of the national celebration of the 1700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, a council that affirmed God became human so that humans might be united to God. Icons are a material manifestation of this descent of God to man so that man and all creation might be transfigured, filled with the light of Christ’s divine beauty.
