Evgenii Skurat (Director)
Evgenii Skurat is a renowned baritone, choir conductor, and specialist in historical performance practices. His expertise spans Baroque, Renaissance, Medieval European, Byzantine, and Egyptian Coptic music traditions. Founder of the Chronos Ensemble, Evgenii has performed as a soloist under conductors including Krzysztof Penderecki, Mstislav Rostropovich, Rudolf Barshai, Evgeny Svetlanov, Teodor Currentzis, and Yuri Temirkanov.
A leading expert in ancient Russian and Byzantine notation, he has transcribed and published numerous collections of 16th-18th century music. His repertoire extends to contemporary Russian and Ukrainian music, with notable performances of works by Boris Lyatoshinsky, Valentyn Silvestrov, and Mieczysław Weinberg, including three Weinberg vocal cycles and Silvestrov’s “Quiet Songs.”
Evgenii is celebrated for his interpretations of English lute songs by John Danyel, John Dowland, and Henry Purcell, as well as German Baroque music and French cantatas from the era of Louis XIV. His distinguished career includes collaborations with esteemed English musicians including Alexander Lingas (Director of Cappella Romana), Andrew Lawrence-King, and Peter Phillips. As a soloist, he has performed with ensembles such as Questa Musica, Sirin, Alta Capella, and MusicAeterna, and was invited to the Salzburg Festival in 2021.
